About Arete

I am pleased to announce the opening of my new practice, Arete Coaching and Consulting. My focus is on supporting individuals, families, professionals, and leaders who aspire to discover and strengthen their Arete.

Arete is a concept from Ancient Greece that means the fullest, deepest expression of the best self within each and every one of us. Serving in the role of consulting coach, guide, and mentor, I help people who are feeling stuck in old ways of doing things.

My focus is on “person in environment” with a self-directed approach and philosophy of care. My 40 years as a professional family therapist, social worker and organizational leader has given me insights and tools that I believe will be useful in assisting in the journey of discovering one’s Arete.

My own personal and professional growth have been powerfully influenced by Steven Covey’s 7 Habits for Highly Effective People, Jim Collins’ Good to Great, the Hersey/Blanchard model of Situational Leadership, and the work process reengineering work of Michael Hammer.

I believe we are all working every day to overcome and recover from the stumbling blocks of old ways of thinking, feeling and doing. In our journey towards Arete, we will find those stumbling blocks and they shall be transformed into stepping stones allowing a clear path to your best self. Because of my many years of experience working with individuals mired in the aftermath of abuse, addiction, loss, hopelessness, loneliness, and despair, I am deeply aware of the power of shame and isolation. Gratefully, I also have come to know the miraculous and limitless transformative power of love and connection. I have seen it do its wondrous work in many lives, families, and communities.

With appreciation for the power of humility and love, my practice is built on the foundation of partnership, shared growth and mutual learning. (I define love as Thomas Aquinas did, that is, “love means to consistently will and choose the good of the other as the other.”) The ”magic” of leadership, be it personal or organizational, is being focused on the proper things, and then successfully achieving goals through a combination of discipline and effort, maintaining the highest levels of inclusion, and tapping into the expertise of the people closest to the work.

My coaching framework will be based on TED (The Empowerment Dynamic) and 3VQ (3 Vital Questions) by David Emerald.
